openingsalvo: Developing a C.O.R.E of volunteers - Calling people to ministry

openingsalvo: Developing a C.O.R.E of volunteers - Calling people to ministry
In our ministry redesign, we had to rethink our conception of volunteerism to fit the culture.
Service is an opportunity for healing and community-building, and those who are willing to participate in the great causes of your organization, may not fit your preconceived notions.

I just heard a story of a church that was looking to expand its physical plant. Most of the leaders were women, not a bad thing at all, but most of the husbands stayed home. When the call for volunteers came to give sweat equity, all the men finally had a reason to show up and participate. These men who were builders, carpenters, electricians, and engineers worked like dogs on this building project, bringing friends from their work sites, and getting materials donated by their companies.

The bonds these men created over this project are strong to this day. Now the men who were at first spectators became invested in the entire life of the church.

Service does heal us. Make the big ask, you will be surprised who will answer the call.
